The Omphalotus Grove Ceramic and Wood Table/Stool
This design was inspired by mushrooms known as the jack-o”-lantern mushroom that grow on the ground, adjacent to host trees.
Using ceramic and wood together to create visual intrigue and a natural material tactile experience.
Materials: Clay with wood ball accents and wood legs
Challenges- Figuring out the shrinkage rate of the clay body and making the pattern pieces that percentage bigger than the finished piece. Rolling out each slab of clay to the exact thickness and size for each part.
Making sure each slab of clay, once rolled out to desired shape, was dry enough before starting the hand building process so it didn’t collapse on itself.
Attaching the clay legs to the top properly to ensure they wouldn’t crack or fall off during the drying, sanding and firing phase. Drilling the holes in the right spot of the clay so they would line up for the wood ball attachment.
Sanding all 16 wood legs exactly the same to fit into the ceramic legs tops.
